For over a year and a half, KLIMA° vor acht has been raising funds to secure an advertising slot before the “Tagesschau” – the search for sponsors has now been successfully concluded. With €135,000 raised from six companies, including GLS Bank and Prokon as main sponsors, production of the climate advert can finally begin.
A long-awaited milestone
Since 2020, we at KLIMA° vor acht have been campaigning for a regular, constructive TV programme on climate issues on public-service broadcasting. To raise the profile of this campaign, we have launched a sponsorship campaign for businesses: over the past year and a half, we have been seeking supporters for our vision. With the sponsorship funds raised, our goal #PrimeTimeForClimate is now a big step closer: we will purchase an advertising slot before the ‘Tagesschau’ and promote greater climate coverage. At a broadcast time with the largest TV audience in Germany.
“It’s very exciting! The team at KLIMA° vor acht is now set to produce the advert they’ve been working towards for more than five years,” says Aysel Osmanoglu of GLS Bank, which is funding the campaign alongside Prokon Regenerative Energien eG as the main sponsor.
Six sponsors are making this possible
Among the first supporters were the energy co-operative EWS Schönau and the oat drink manufacturer Oatly. The Sauerland-based machinery manufacturer Ohrmann GmbH and the energy consultancy ENSO GmbH also recognised the importance of good climate coverage at an early stage and came on board as sponsors. The largest contributions came from GLS Gemeinschaftsbank eG and Prokon Regenerative Energien eG, each providing €50,000.
“KLIMA° vor acht delivers exactly what we urgently need in Germany: reliable, easily accessible and scientifically sound information on climate change. As an energy co-operative, we stand for responsibility and transparency and support this campaign wholeheartedly,” says Henning von Stechow, Chairman of the Board of Prokon eG.
Why this advert is needed before the Tagesschau
The reason for the campaign lies in the figures: in 2025, climate issues accounted for just 1.33 per cent of Das Erste’s total programming – compared with 1.49 per cent in 2024 and 2.2 per cent in 2023. The situation is similar at ZDF: 1.32 per cent of broadcasting minutes in 2025 focused on the climate crisis, down from 1.4 per cent in 2024 and 1.9 per cent in 2023.
“Global average temperatures are continuing to rise, yet media coverage of the issue is steadily declining,” sums up Friederike Mayer, chair of KLIMA° vor acht e.V.
What happens next
Once the search for sponsors has been finalised, the next phase begins: the production of the advert. The aim remains to raise awareness of the climate crisis through a daily, constructive programme broadcast at prime time on German television – where the widest audience can be reached.
We would like to thank all our sponsors for their trust and support. Without them, this step would not be possible.
