KLIMA° vor acht in action

The association was founded in 2020 and has been growing steadily ever since. It is based on two core principles: “Everybody can join!” and “Together we can achieve more!”

Team

Over 30 people are members of the association and are committed to championing KLIMA° vor acht. Our backgrounds? Diverse! From journalists working in TV, radio and print, to scientists, students, IT specialists and business leaders. We have one thing in common: the desire to contribute to better climate coverage in the media!

Partnerships

Joining forces helps! Therefore, we strive to increase our impact by collaborating with other organisations. We constantly expand our network, which includes, amongst others, our French counterpart Quota Climat and the Climate Journalism Network.

Transparency

Transparency is important to us. That is why we aim to join the Transparent Civil Society Initiative (ITZ). Until we do, we already disclose our activities, the way we organise and how we are funded.

Our message in the media

We are delighted with the response to our messages in the media. It encourages us to continue our journey and helps us raise awareness of our ask. Would you like to write about us too? You can find a briefing note on KLIMA° vor acht and press releases on our press page.

FAQ

We are a non-profit organisation and see ourselves as an inclusive, community-led initiative. We work as a team of volunteers united by our concern that many people do not have enough information to understand the immediate dangers of global warming caused by greenhouse gases. We introduce ourselves on our team page.

Our vision is for climate coverage to get a regular place in prime time programme. This way, Society as a whole is kept informed through high-quality reporting that reflects the urgency of the climate crisis, and is encouraged to take both individual and collective action.

Through daily or regular shows, background knowledge on specific aspects can be conveyed in a targeted manner, and a constructive approach can be offered.

The causes, consequences and potential solutions are so complex, dynamic and interlinked that there will be no shortage of topics or current developments to discuss.

Climate is not the same as weather, and the various aspects of the climate crisis are much more than ‘just’ meteorological in nature. Climate change is driven by energy production, mobility, agriculture and much more. ‘Wetter vor acht’ is not the right place to cover all these aspects.

No. Linear television reaches other audiences, particularly older ones. According to a WDR survey, it is the sole source of information for 35 per cent of people. During prime time, ARD and ZDF attract a very large audience. The tagesschau, for example, attracts 9.5 million viewers. We welcome the fact that the topic is being given greater prominence in non-linear media. However, given the different target audiences, this is no substitution.

It’s true that the subject is complex. But the aim of KLIMA° vor acht is precisely to distil this complexity into a format that can be communicated and made understandable. With its educational remit, its broad social acceptance, its resources and its reach, public-service broadcasting is the medium best suited to this task.

KLIMA° vor acht receives editorial advice and support from experts in the fields of science and science journalism.
