Hamburg/Paris, 26 September 2024. This marks the start of a new Franco-German partnership: the French NGO QuotaClimat and KLIMA° vor acht are today announcing their cross-border collaboration. For both organisations, this is an important step in their shared mission to tackle the climate crisis with the help of the media.
“The climate crisis is not a national problem and can only be solved at an international level –– this also applies to communication and public awareness-raising regarding this global challenge,” said Friederike Mayer, Chair of KLIMA° vor acht e.V. “We are delighted to have found a partner in QuotaClimat to rethink climate communication at a European level.”
“The fight against climate disinformation knows no borders, and regulation is far more effective when it takes place at European rather than national level,” says Eva Morel, co-founder of the French NGO QuotaClimat. “That is why, through KLIMA° vor acht, we will be working in a Franco-German partnership to improve media coverage of environmental issues.”
Both organisations emphasise the crucial role of the media in combating the climate crisis and mitigating its worst effects. Together, they are campaigning for more comprehensive and consistent media coverage of this pressing issue, and for raising public awareness of the shortcomings in climate coverage. They aim to encourage media organisations across Europe to take greater responsibility in addressing the climate emergency.
The two NGOs aim to achieve this, amongst other things, by collecting and analysing relevant data in order to highlight shortcomings in reporting and prevent them in future.
About QuotaClimat
QuotaClimat is a French non-governmental organisation that campaigns for more and better media coverage of environmental issues. Founded in 2022, the NGO now operates at French, European and international levels, focusing on three areas of activity: data collection and analysis, lobbying and public relations.
About KLIMA° vor acht
The German NGO KLIMA° vor acht is campaigning for the climate crisis to be given greater prominence in the media, particularly during prime time. The project aims to boost climate coverage in the media. In particular, the aim is to persuade television broadcasters to introduce a short TV programme during prime time to provide the public with comprehensive information about the pressing challenges of climate change. Through episodes produced in-house, KLIMA° vor acht has demonstrated that this is both possible and necessary.
