Hamburg, 16 December 2025. The search for sponsors for the ‘KLIMA° vor acht ins Fernsehen’ campaign has come to an end: the KLIMA° vor acht e.V. association has raised a total of 135,000 EUR from sponsors. The money is to be used to purchase advertising space before the ‘Tagesschau’ news programme, in order to run adverts for a programme such as ‘KLIMA° vor acht’. With the support of the participating sponsors, including GLS Bank and Prokon, production of a promotional programme for ‘KLIMA° vor acht’ can now get under way.
“Global average temperatures are continuing to rise, yet media coverage of the issue is steadily declining. In 2025, climate issues will account for just 1.3 per cent of Das Erste’s total programming,” says Friederike Mayer, chair of KLIMA° vor acht e.V.
Initial assessment of the sponsorship
Among the campaign’s first supporters were the energy co-operative EWS Schönau and the oat drink manufacturer Oatly. The Sauerland-based machinery manufacturer Ohrmann GmbH and the energy consultancy ENSO GmbH have also recognised the importance of good climate coverage and are sponsoring the campaign. The largest contributions came from GLS Gemeinschaftsbank eG and Prokon Regenerative Energien eG, whose role as the campaign’s main sponsors provided significant momentum.
“KLIMA° vor acht delivers exactly what we urgently need in Germany: reliable, easily accessible and scientifically sound information on climate change. As an energy co-operative, we stand for responsibility and transparency, and we support this campaign wholeheartedly. We are delighted to be working with KLIMA° vor acht to help ensure that climate journalism secures a permanent slot in prime time.” – Henning von Stechow, Chairman of the Board of Prokon eG
“It’s really exciting! The team at Klima vor 8 are now set to produce the advert they’ve been working towards for more than five years! The climate crisis is set to be the topic of discussion during primetime, just before the Tagesschau. And GLS Bank is the main sponsor. We’re delighted to be able to support this valuable work. It’s very exciting!” Aysel Osmanoglu, GLS Bank
Campaign highlights the lack of climate coverage
The non-profit association KLIMA° vor acht e.V. has been campaigning since 2020 for a regular, constructive TV programme on climate issues on public-service broadcasting. Climate coverage on public-service broadcasting remains marginal. A recent analysis by the organisation shows that in 2025, the climate was discussed in just 1.33 per cent of the total programming on Das Erste; in 2024, the figure was 1.49 per cent, and in 2023, 2.2 per cent. The situation is no better at ZDF: this year, only 1.32 per cent of broadcasting minutes were devoted to the climate crisis, a challenge facing humanity (2024: 1.4 per cent and 2023: 1.9 per cent). The data is current as at 15 December.
