First success: KLIMA° vor acht as part of an exchange programme with RTL

30 March 2021. The KLIMA° vor acht initiative is now in discussions with the TV channel RTL regarding a new regular programme on climate change. The commercial broadcaster is thus responding to the organisation’s call for well-researched yet accessible reporting on climate change during prime time.

Michael Flammer, Chair of KLIMA° vor acht e.V., says: “Our organisation, KLIMA° vor acht, was set up to improve climate coverage on German television and thereby reach as many people as possible. That is why it is a great success for us and our supporters that RTL is now the first television channel to respond to our call.”

A week ago, KLIMA° vor acht published an open letter to Tom Buhrow, the chairman of ARD. Around 180 prominent figures from the worlds of science, culture and the media were among the letter’s initial signatories. They are calling for the development of a regular, scientifically sound and accessible programme on the climate crisis to be broadcast during prime time.

“We look forward to a constructive dialogue with RTL and hope that this will result in a programme that meets our standards for good climate coverage. RTL has recognised the signs of the times – now other broadcasters must follow suit,” says Friederike Mayer of KLIMA° vor acht.

The six pilot episodes of KLIMA° vor acht, produced in-house, will be filmed in April as planned and broadcast shortly afterwards on the programme’s own YouTube channel.

RTL is the first television channel to respond to KLIMA° vor acht eight years ago: the commercial broadcaster is in talks about a regular climate programme to be broadcast at prime time.
